Navigating the Search
In Tyler Perry’s Beauty in the Black, Kimmie’s life represents a cycle many women find themselves in when they lack a clear sense of purpose. Kimmie has no place to call home as a result of the betrayal from her mother, as a result she seeks safety and stability in the wrong places. She falls into toxic relationships, victim-blaming, and harmful environments. Kimmie resorts to drug running and stripping just to survive and allows manipulation and vices to fill the void where her purpose should reside.
Kimmie’s actions are a reflection of what happens when purpose is lost or unclear. Without it, we often chase temporary pleasures—whether material possessions, validation from others, or dangerous vices—as a way to escape from our pain or dissatisfaction. But as we see in Kimmie’s story, these fleeting pleasures only lead to a vicious cycle of destruction, disappointment, and deeper wounds.
Purpose As A Compass
Purpose is not just a lofty idea—it is the foundation upon which a life of worth is built. When women lack purpose, they seek fulfillment in fleeting pleasures, as seen through Kimmie’s downward spiral into destructive behaviors and toxic relationships. Yet, when we embrace our purpose, it acts as a compass, guiding us through life’s toughest decisions, helping us stay grounded in our inherent worth, and keeping us from being distracted by temporary fixes.
In my work as a worthiness coach, I’ve seen firsthand how discovering your purpose can break the cycle of seeking pleasure in all the wrong places. My prayer is that by the end of the Netflix series Kimmie experiences a major turning point in her life, where she shifts from merely surviving to thriving. She no longer settles for scraps, but takes ownership of her future, recognizing her worth and her power to create a legacy.
Why Purpose Matters
The absence of purpose often leads to destructive coping mechanisms. Whether it’s seeking validation through relationships, material possessions, or destructive behaviors, without a clear sense of purpose, women are vulnerable to pursuing external pleasures that lead them further away from their true value.
Kimmie’s story, like that of many women, shows that when we don’t understand our worth, we let life dictate our choices rather than allowing our purpose to guide us. But when we embrace our purpose, everything changes. We stop seeking approval or validation from others, and we begin to live a life of intention, fulfillment, and peace. Purpose offers a powerful antidote to the pressures and pitfalls society places on women to chase success and happiness in all the wrong places.
