SCRIPTURES FOR MOTHERS

Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day in a peculiar way. Mothers will not be taken to dinner, to the spa for a facial, the nail salon for a mani/pedi, or a masseuse for a deep tissue massage. While for some this may be a joyous time, for others it is a time of grief, sorrow, sadness, and depression. While some have their mothers in their presence, or they can make a phone call to hear her voice, others long to hear their mother’s voice one more time. Some mothers are grieving because they had to bury their children. Some children are grieving because their mother never wanted them or their relationship is tumultuous. If you can relate to any of this I encourage you to remember Psalm 34:18, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Don’t deny your feelings whatever they may be, but allow these scriptures to pick you up. Allow these scriptures to be your sunshine on a cloudy day. Take comfort in knowing God is still the same God today, tomorrow, and forevermore.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8 NIV)

We all sin and fall short of God’s glory. We are given children to protect, provide, nurture, guide. Yet the most important thing we can do for our children as mothers is love them. Love them from the crowns of their head to the soles of their feet. When they receive love from us they can properly give and receive love. When your kids are doing wrong, love them. When your kids are doing right, love them. Love them through their good and bad so they do not go looking for love in all the wrong places. We are to love our children the way God loves us as his children. They need our love and we need their love. I try to tell my daughter I love her all throughout the day so she knows that no matter what, mommy loves me.

As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you. (Isaiah 66:13 NIV)

Our children come to us for everything, no matter how big or small. Mothers are natural nurturers. We comfort our children in a way that no one else can. Just hearing our voice, feeling our touch or a hug lets them know that everything will be okay. Whether a kid was mean to them at school, they fell while playing outside, they had a tummy ache, their tooth is loose, they were not asked to go to the prom, or they are sad that they cannot go to school to socialize with their friends due to the pandemic, we are their safe space. God does the same for us whether we are feeling anxious, grieving over a loved one, going through a divorce, or attempting to heal from unresolved trauma. God will always be there to comfort us. Our tears don’t fall on deaf ears. He will comfort us no matter what the situation is.

Just make sure you stay alert. Keep close watch over yourselves. Don’t forget anything of what you’ve seen. Don’t let your heart wander off. Stay vigilant as long as you live. Teach what you’ve seen and heard to your children and grandchildren. (Deuteronomy 4:9 MSG)

As mothers, we are our children’s first example. Before we can go anywhere else and testify we must testify to our children through our words and actions. We must lead and guide them. We must teach them right from wrong. Teach them love, grace, kindness, forgiveness and to extend the same grace to others that we would like extended to us. Nightly, I write in my prayer journal so my daughter knows not to bother me while I’m talking with Jesus. She also knows God has been very good to us so we must continuously give thanks, honor, and praise. I let her know to be grateful for everything and take nothing for granted. I teach her to utilize her manners, to look both ways before crossing the street, not to talk to strangers, and that self-control is very important. We teach our kids what we have experienced so that they can make informed decisions, and even if they wander off the path, all hope is not lost.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.(Philippians 4:13)

Nothing that’s worth anything in life comes easy. As mothers, our patience will be tested. Our last nerve will be worked. Some days we will feel like we are going crazy. We will have little to no sleep. We will hide in the bathroom just for a few moments of silence. We will feel guilty for not doing enough. We will become frustrated because we want the best for our children and they have ventured off course. We may question if we were cut out to be a mother. We will forget to pack the lunch, set the alarm, or have to chase the school bus down because our child forgot their book bag at home. Often times we don’t know our strength until we are put to the test. You got this mom!!!!

For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you. (Isaiah 41:13NKJV)

As a mother, we have experienced times when we didn’t know where our help was coming from. Bills were due and resources were limited. Yet, somehow God always shows up and shows out by making a way out of no way. And we are able to stretch a meal, make a payment arrangement, borrow some money, receive unexpected money, or an unexpected blessing. As a single mother, I have been down to my last dime and had no clue what I would do several times. And no one knew but me and God. Yet I am standing before you today with all of our (my daughter and myself) needs met, even during a global pandemic. All glory and praise goes to the most High God.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9 NIV)

Those late nights and early mornings, while painful, will be worth it. Being a mom is beautiful and difficult, rewarding, and challenging, yet we would not trade it for the world. Whether you are feeding them, changing their diapers, completing a project, running them to a dance recital, or simply being a listening ear, your kids will come of age and they will always remember how you were there for them whenever they called. They will show you how grateful they are for the sacrifices you’ve made throughout their lives. Prior to COVID, my daughter attended cheer camp and on Friday she performed. Due to my work schedule, I haven’t been able to see her perform. Yet on this particular Friday, my boss allowed me to leave work a little early and I will never forget how her face lit up when she saw me walk into the gymnasium. It is so important to be present for your kids. They will forget about the presents, but they will always remember your presence.

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. (Ecclesiastes 2:24 KJV)

Do not beat yourself up for not doing things perfectly or as others would expect you to. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Enjoy the little things, the things usually taken for granted. This Mother’s Day thanks to Rona I have shifted my perspective. I am committed to creating memories with my daughter. We will not be going anywhere or getting dressed up. We will be at home in our pajamas. I will cook dinner and we will bake cookies, and enjoy each other’s company while watching our favorite Disney movies. At the center of it all will be the bond that we share with one another.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.(Ephesians 2:10 NIV)

God created us in his image to be mothers, he prepared us for the tasks we are currently doing. While it may be far from easy he has equipped us with all of the necessary tools we need to succeed. We will not always be perfect, but as long as we do our best, God is pleased.

But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don't get tired, they walk and don't lag behind. (Isaiah 40:31 MSG)

On days when you are at your whit’s end, ready to throw in the towel, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed while on the motherhood journey, do not worry, do not fret. God is right there with you, ensuring that you have the strength and the willpower to keep on keeping on.  Continue to wait on and trust in the Lord, you will find that your good days will outweigh your bad days. If you’ve lost a child as a result of miscarriage continue looking for your rainbow. Even if God does not bless you with a child of your own, he will bless you with a child who you can shower with love as if they were your own. I once lost a baby whose birth date was May 3, 2013. I was beyond devastated, yet God favored me and allowed me to give birth to my rainbow baby Kalisse who was born 6 months later.  The cesarean section, heartburn, and stretch marks were all worth it.

I wish you a beautiful Mother’s Day!
